The Society for a Secure and Sustainable Water Future (SSSWF) is a Virginia-based nonprofit founded by a family whose decade-long battle to legalize rainwater harvesting helped change state law and ignite a larger movement for water resilience.

Our mission is to make rainwater harvesting a practical, sustainable, and accessible solution to today’s water and climate challenges, especially in communities that have historically been left behind. We believe water security is not a luxury. It is a basic human right that belongs to everyone.

SSSWF was born from lived experience. Our founder, Alexander Jarvis, grew up watching his parents fight for the right to collect and reuse rainwater at their auto repair shop, Go Green Auto Care, in Newport News. Their determination in the face of government resistance led to legislative victory, public awareness, and a permanent shift in Virginia water policy. That hard-won fight became the foundation for a bigger mission: to help others access the tools, knowledge, and protections that can transform local water systems from vulnerable to self-reliant.

Today, SSSWF is spreading the good news about rain, installing systems, empowering communities, and showing that sustainable water solutions are not only possible, they are urgent. We combine technical expertise with grassroots connection, offering certified rain harvesting design and education alongside real community partnerships. Our work is grounded in both science and soul.

Through pilot projects with universities, partnerships with parks and public agencies, and direct outreach to underserved neighborhoods, we are helping people own their water story. From garden cisterns to municipal-scale innovation, we’re building a future where everyday people are part of the solution.

We envision a world where no one is left dependent on crumbling infrastructure. A world where sustainability is part of daily life, and where rain, so often overlooked, becomes a symbol of independence, resilience, and hope.

This is about environmental change, but also justice, health, and legacy. Every drop we collect spreads a message of what’s possible.

Join us in spreading the good news about rain and in building a future rooted in equity, resilience, and community.
